Guiness Book of Records & recent news coverage

Last week Beverly and Bob Youngren and their daughter, Jennifer Lucore (the #1 women's pb player in the recent USAPA National Tournament) were invited to Dallas by the USTA to teach their tennis pros all about pickleball.  500 people played pickleball in an attempt at a Guiness Book of Records and Pickleball Inc donated a wooden paddle and ball to each participant.  Beverly said it was  amazing to see so many courts in the awesome venue, and everyone had a great time.

There also was an Expo in Scottsdale Nov. 16th.

The City of Surprise is conducting a recreation survey that will be online through the end of December, 2012. There is an opportunity to express your opinion about use of the recreation centers (think indoor pickleball) and the need for more outdoor courts. This question at the end of the survey allows for open-ended comments: "What additional recreational opportunities would you like to see within Surprise?"

 We have a lot for which to be thankful.  Our weather has been perfect and so has the comradely on the pickleball courts.  It's nice to see more familiar faces:  Ken V,  Ken, Howard, Vicki; and some rather new players:  Peter, Don, Karen, Joyce, Erik, Jager, and Sylvia to name a few.  We look forward to seeing the rest of you asap.

USAPA NATIONAL TOURNAMENT IN YOUR BACKYARD

(That is, if you are in Sun Village).  This is the 4th year that the Nationals Tournament is being held at Sun City Festival.  450 players from all over are competing and it's been amazing so far.  I'm a vendor and have sold items to players from Taiwan, Canada, Georgia, Texas, New York, Tennessee, Washington, Oregon, etc.  We've had great weather (hot for the players), but it may turn cooler this weekend.  I highly recommend you coming to watch if you have the time.  Just drive west on Bell Road for about 15 miles.  You can't miss it.

Am so happy that more of our club members have been returning.  Clinics led by Cynthia and Mr. Bill have been well received.  Our lights have not been adjusted yet, but the project should be completed in the near future.

Jerry E. and Brian J. played in several tournaments this summer, but were too shy to give me their results.  Their favorite cheerleaders (Arlene and Donna) enjoyed the events, too.

I see evidence of pickleball participation growing everywhere I turn.  One community limits their players to the hours of 2-6 pm while others have "banned" paddles that they have deemed too loud.  I am thankful that our courts, community, and club are 'user friendly.'

I can't believe that I haven't updated this since September.  Guess I need you to give me some news to include.

What's Up?

Mr. Bill and his wife are in Hawaii celebrating their 45th!  Congratulations!!!!!

I hope you are getting ready to come back to Sun Village!  You've been gone too long!

Mr. Bill inquired as to when the lights would be fixed so we could play at night.  The response he got wasn't favorable!  Am sure he'll pursue it.

Although we didn't get the rain other parts of the valley did, we had some wind.  It blew our cork board off the wall.

Pickleball in the White Mountains

Camping in Show Low has been so enjoyable, but I've missed playing pickleball.  However, I discovered (on the internet) they play here, in a gym.  The carpet makes it quite different as do the murals on the wall (it was hard for me to see the ball well), but I met a lot of good players.  Some are here for the summer while others are just visiting; Apache Junction, Oro Valley, Fountain Hills, SC Grand, Sun City, & Pebble Creek were well represented.  I didn't keep track, but I was around 50/50, and plan to go back.

Olympics, etc.

Howard C.  will get to see one of the semifinals soccer games at Wembley Stadium on August 4th with his younger son, Tyler.  Look for him!

USAPA National Tournament--Nov. 4 - Nov. 12, 2012:  Hosted for the 4th year at Sun City Festival. Sunday, Nov. 4 is a welcome day. Monday Nov. 12 is a rain make-up day if necessary.
